Below is the Forward from Inner Peace – Outward Power

Addiction is the Solution

There are a multitude of reasons why people become addicted, from wanting to fit in with a group to needing to block out pain and trauma. But, an addiction always begins its life as the solution, not the problem. There are hundreds of addictions to choose from, and various reasons why we pick the ones we do, but the goal or purpose is always the same. The addiction is the solution. To make us feel better or at least relieve pain, anxiety or stress in any given moment is the solution to a deeper issue; why we don’t feel better or why we feel discomfort in the first place. Addiction brings instant relief, usually quickly and efficiently, and becomes addictive both psychologically and physically. Giving up an addiction therefore becomes almost impossible. Why would we want to give up something that makes us feel so much better in order to be stuck in a current condition of insecurity and pain? Why would we give up the solution, to be faced once again with the pain?

Addiction is the Symptom

Addiction is not the original problem. The problem or cause is often buried deep within the recesses of our subconscious. The trauma and pain we experience in the moment is screaming out for relief. The addiction doesn’t ask questions about why or what, it just happily supplies instant relief. So, the addiction is a symptom of unresolved issues in our life that have not been appropriately dealt with, whether we want to admit that or not.

Addiction is the Belief System

The belief system that best describes addiction is experiencing either emotional or physical pain is more than we can handle, and will destroy us and we will die if we don’t get immediate relief. This belief system is not always conscious and doesn’t even have to pass through the brain to be effective. For some, this belief brings an automatic and autonomic reaction of fight, flight or freeze, which calls for the addiction as the only solution available in the moment.

Addiction is the Problem

The relief provided by the addiction has a shelf life. It will eventually stop working, thus causing the body to go through withdrawal of the addiction and the ultimate relief it had provided. The person is now back into the original pain or anxiety and nothing has really changed, except the addition of withdrawing from a substance, the addiction, which often creates more pain, stress and suffering. This calls for using the addiction more often and in higher doses to continue the same level of relief as before. Now the addiction has become the problem. It almost doesn’t matter what the original causes of pain and discomfort were in the first place. The main focus becomes surviving the highs and lows brought about by the addiction itself, just to function and survive. The body becomes obsessed with the addiction itself. This obsession invades the consciousness with sufficient power to take over our will.

Addiction is Total Dysfunction

At this point in time, the person and the physical body are locked into a battle of survival. The addiction no longer brings the high or provides the relief of feeling better. We need it just to feel normal. Without the addiction of choice, functioning in the real world of work and relationships becomes more and more impossible. The lack of the addiction is far worse than it ever was to avoid the original pain in the first place. At some point, there is no normal anymore and there comes a time when you must face the fact that giving up the addiction is the only functional choice we have left. Some people choose recovery long before it gets this far. Others don’t make it until they hit the bottom of total dysfunction. Still others don’t make it at all. Where do you find yourself on this journey of your addiction?
